About the Sinfonia Strings

First introduced at the 2012 National Convention in Orlando, Florida, the Sinfonia Strings continues to add to the one-of-a-kind musical immersion that Phi Mu Alpha Conventions offer. From special performances to collaborations with other ensembles, Brothers will have the opportunity to learn and make music under the direction of credentialed and experienced directors like Dr. Peter Wilson.

The 2022 National Convention, participants of the Sinfonia Strings can expect to perform during the formal Gala Banquet and partake in a special performance project during the convention

Dr. Peter Wilson

Peter Wilson is an engaging and multifaceted violinist and conductor; The Washington Post called his musicianship “first-class”. He is Music Director of the Waynesboro Symphony and Richmond Philharmonic Orchestras in Virginia. Highly respected throughout the National Capital Region, he has served as a violinist of The White House for nearly a quarter century. He is Concertmaster of the American Festival Pops Orchestra and has guest conducted the National Symphony and the National Gallery Orchestras. He holds music degrees from Northwestern University and The Catholic University of America where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts. Dr. Wilson began his professional career as Concertmaster of the Walt Disney World Orchestra. He has appeared as violin soloist with Rosemary Clooney, Renée Fleming, Bernadette Peters, and composer/conductor John Williams. He has appeared in international publications including The Strad, which stated “[Wilson] made music that had the stamp of quality.”

Please use the following performance skill level descriptions when answering the questions on this page:

Performance Level:

5 - Exemplary: I am recognized as an outstanding performer. I have performed or am capable of performing virtuosic solos on my instrument. My range and tone are on the level of professional performers. My musicianship is well above average, and as an ensemble participant, I believe I will be among the best on my instrument in a national-level ensemble.

4 - Very Good: I am recognized as a very good performer for both solo and ensemble work. I have performed or am capable of performing solo passages on my instrument. My range and tone meet the expectations for excellent performers. My musicianship is above average, and as an ensemble participant, I believe I will be well-suited for participation in a national-level ensemble.

3 - Good: I am respected as a good ensemble performer. I do not usually perform solos in ensembles, but my range and tone meet the expectations for good performers. My musicianship is above average, and as an ensemble participant, I believe I will be a good section performer in a national-level ensemble.

2 - Limited: I am proficient on this instrument and perform on it occasionally. If called upon to perform on this instrument, I am confident I can prepare all the parts for advanced big band music, but I would not be well-suited for exposed passages or solos.

Audition Details

While participation with the Sinfonia Strings is open to all those players that wish to participate, all applicants are required to submit a brief audio or video recording example of their choosing that they feel best displays their ability on the instrument. This recording will be used to aid in chair placement selection.

I understand that by accepting the position in the Sinfonia Strings, I give Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia permission to use my name, image, photos, and performances in any publication or recording for fraternity use. I understand that once committed I am expected to prepare the music and be in attendance for rehearsals and performances at the 2022 Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Convention in St. Louis. I furthermore understand that I must register for the Full Registration package for the National Convention in order to retain my spot in the ensemble. I also understand that I may be removed from the ensemble if I arrive late or unprepared for any rehearsal.
