Biography

Chad “Sir Wick” Hughes studied composition under James Aikman, Erik Santos, Bright Sheng, Curtis Curtis-Smith, Dinos Constantinides, Craig Weston, and Pulitzer-Prize winning composer William Bolcom. His compositions and arrangements have been premiered and performed by The Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, University of Florida, The Georgia Symphony, Indiana University, Penn State University, HBCU Consortium Symphonic Band, Morehouse College, Graceland University, Indianapolis Pops Symphony, Gainesville Symphony Orchestra, University of Memphis, University of Michigan, Alcorn State University, Bowling Green State University, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Clark Atlanta University, Baker University, and Montana State University.

Dr. Hughes has been commissioned by Weston Sprott, Acting Principal Trombonist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; Demondrae Thurman, Professor of Music in Euphonium and chair of the Brass Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, The Georgia Symphony, Rachel Parker Childers of the Boston Symphony, Kenneth Thompkins, Principal Trombonist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Jeremy Mastrangelo of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Howard University, and Virginia Tech University. As an adjudicator and clinician, Hughes has been active in the state of Michigan, Georgia, Maryland, Florida, Missouri, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Kansas.

Dr. Hughes hails from Detroit, MI graduating from Cass Tech High School. He earned his BMus from the University of Michigan, MM from Kansas State University, and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. Dr. Hughes is currently Director of Bands at Morehouse College, where he also teaches the history of jazz, counterpoint, and orchestration.
